staff members communicate trust in their colleagues, but are guarded and
distrustful of leaders, and are looking for more involvement and
transparency regarding the decisions that affect them.
A few key points made in the survey include:
- High performers are looking for more consistent feedback in regards to their performance
- Employees are searching for more support when it comes to risk-taking endeavors
- Leaders are not being used to their full potential, and many are even working one or more levels below where they should be
- Employees are not empowered to resolve their problems autonomously
- Employees are putting the blame on their leaders for not connecting individual professional goals with general corporate performance. They are looking for validation that what they are doing matters and for a reason why/how their work impacts the company as whole
While there is no "one size fits all" cure for addressing
every staff trouble that's encountered, it is important to recognize
that a divide between leaders and their staff hurts company performance;
and in today's challenging market it is crucial that every employee
operate at their best - regardless of their position. Leaders should
discover innovative ways to tackle the areas of staff frustration and
discontent so that they do not end up searching for alternative
employment.
The most effective leadership does not come from
delegating behind a desk; it requires face time with your staff. This
can be extremely difficult if you employ a distributed workforce -
unless, of course, you have the technology that can bridge the chasm
between yourself and them.
